Review of The House of the Devil (2009) by Colby F — 13 Mar 2011
This film is scary but oddly quiet. Most of the movie is about Jocelin Donahue's character (fantastic actress) walking around a big, creepy house at night. What makes the film succeed is her performance, the fact you have no idea who's in the house with her (very suspenseful) and the eerie realization that something terrifying is coming.
The end is, in fact, just that: a terrifying, visually exciting, violent climax. The final scenes are actually so good that if 'The House of the Devil' had been made in the 80's it would be considered a classic by now.
The entire movie feels like it was made in the late 70's early 80's with an indie-feel and a "groovy" soundtrack, yet it still manages to be scary; horror is timeless, if done right.
This film does it right!
