Review of The Holy Girl (2004) by Matt B — 08 Feb 2006
The Holy Sister is a visual treat, taking its time with slow, quiet moments that are the movie equivalent of soft ambient music. The actors perform well under skilled direction. There's a lot of deliberate ambiguity in the scenes which leaves the story open to gradually climb to the climax. I spent much of the film pondering the various messages that might be construed from its sparse, ambivalent mood. As it turns out, it's just a set-up for the incredibly tense moments that ramp-up towards the end of the movie.
But then the ending? Honestly, I was disappointed. However, upon reflection I came to appreciate it. I can't give it more than a six though, due to my initial disappointment.
