Review of The Hero (2017) by Rogueedits . — 11 Jul 2017
I loved this picture. I am 57, & I want to see more movies starring mature actors & addressing mature themes. Real themes. Old age & its inevitable final act are about as real as it gets.
Laura Prepon, Sam Elliott, & Nick Offerman were wonderful leads. One thing I appreciated about this movie is that it dispenses with unnecessary exegesis & boring expository dialogue, & trusts the audience to "get it." This movie did not spell out things that I did not need spelled out. Bravo!
The one thing I found jarring & that did not ring true was Prepon's character's cruel & trite stand-up routine. I did not believe that someone who once aspired to be a wordsmith would be that careless with words, that insensitive & unoriginal. That was not Prepon's fault; that was a script problem in an otherwise terrific script.
On the whole, though, I loved it. I want to see more movies like this.
