Review of The Florida Project (2017) by Matthew D — 06 Mar 2018
Willem Dafoe is the highlight as the tired, yet wholesome landlord of a Florida motel. Bria Vinaite is the standout new star as a neglectful mother. The children run wild. All of these statements are true, yet only breach the surface of the greatness of the over-looked indie film spectacle The Florida Project.
The Florida Project is particularly memorable as the audience follows the children's perspective in a very impoverished section of Florida. This film portrays life in poverty without insulting the subjects, nor making light of the situation at large. It treats the world with respect, but also demonstrates the problems in surviving in one of the poorest areas in The United States.
Well acted, beautifully shot, quick paced, intensely acted, realistically written, and much more; The Florida Project rises above its meager budget and small release into a truly memorable indie film. I suspect that The Florida Project with be looked back at in time as a cult classic.
