Review of The Call of Cthulhu (2006) by Alexander Z — 29 Nov 2010
What an absolute surprise! This 2005 film is black and white, silent, and stunningly atmospheric. Essentially a glorified fan-film (it was put together by the H.P. Lovecraft Historical Society for $50,000), "Cthulhu" is full of ingenious set-pieces that echo German Expressionism, and apart from the fairly obvious use of video instead of film, feels like it would be right at home in a movie theater in the early 1900s.
The shot compositions are all delightfully constructed, but the editing feels much more vibrant than an actual film from that period, giving it an entertaining momentum. At 46 minutes, this film is a breeze to watch, and well worth the time, especially for any fan of Lovecraft.
