Review of The Broadway Melody (1929) by Carlos R — 08 Feb 2010
From a film lover point of view this film is fascinating on so many levels. This was the pre code era, an early talkie, the 2nd movie ever to win best picture, and the first musical! Many of the songs present in the Broadway Melody films are featured in the Oscar winning Singin' In The Rain and went on to be classics.
This is where it all began and although it lacks the glitz and glam of a Busby Berkley musical, it's fun and even dramatic. "The Wedding of the Painted Doll" number is about as elaborate as it gets.
Sure the sound is a little muddy, as they are just beginning to learn how to transition into sound, but at the same time the acting is smooth and the plot easy to follow. Bessie Love is great as the selfless older sister Hank.
Anita Page is gorgeous as the equally selfless younger sister, Queenie.
