Review of The Bird People in China (1998) by Sean D — 07 Jan 2010
Not to many people have heard this but it's one of Takashi Miike's earlier films. A drama with a level of charm and harmony about it, but since Audition came out at the same time, this gem was lost.
The story itself plods along at a slow pace. However what saves this movie's snail crawl of narrative is Characters. A yakuza who is such an asshole but has a heart of gold, a naive but determined business man; I loved these people.
Its high caliber of characterization, coupled with a heart warming ending ( possibly the least ambiguous Miike ending ) left me feeling warm and fuzzy inside and I couldn't ask for more.
