Review of The Ballad of Buster Scruggs (2018) by Mariec C — 24 Nov 2018
In six chapters, the Coen Brothers' treat us to their eyes-wide-open fascination with the wild west, swiftly debunking myth after myth of any nostalgic attraction it holds. As usual, their focus is on the risk of death, which comes early, and comes unexpectedly, not only to the vulnerable, but also to those who are skilled at cheating it.
A handful of times, the movie's violence is raw. In case we may be inclined to romantically gloss over it, the Coen Brothers want us to know it in all its cruel depth. Visually, the scenes approach sheer perfection, as if the brothers have studied tintypes so long and in such detail, that they now see the world the way the old photographs depict it.
I will gladly watch anything they produce.
