Review of The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes (1939) by Mary H — 04 Jan 2010
This is a fun little movie that pretty much established the familiar image of Sherlock Holmes, with his deerstalker cap, meerschaum pipe, and tendency to say things like, "Elementary, my dear Watson.
" The plot actually isn't as good as I had hoped, since we know from the beginning that Professor Moriarty is behind everything. Still, I can see why Basil Rathbone's Holmes is iconic, and Nigel Bruce is very good as Doctor Watson.
Ida Lupino is also good as the damsel-in-distress. George Zucco makes a fine Professor Moriarty. The direction and everything are competent, pretty standard for the time. My literary knowledge let me figure out one clue twenty minutes before Holmes did! Elementary!
