Review of Synecdoche, New York (2008) by Elgan D — 18 Jul 2010
It takes a certain type of quirk to correctly induce Charlie Kaufman's humor and work persona, though "Adaptation" and "Being John Malkovich" serve as pretty dandy reminders of his erratic brilliance.
If "Malkovich" didn't do it for you, "Synecdoche, New York" is Kaufman's first true masterpiece. Nary indulgent melodrama brought before an audience, nor purely fictional psyche.
The writing places the writer into the story, which is where the movie becomes more than comedy, drama, or any placed category he and Spike Jonze have been known for breaking. This is Kaufman doing Coen brothers.
I'll be damned if that's a filmmaking sin.
