Review of Sweet Movie (1974) by T.a. P — 09 Sep 2007
Somewhere outside the limits of the tantalizing and taboo... or maybe in between. Who can really say. Discursive elements of materialism (ur-capitalism) and Soviet authoritarianism (ur-communism), echoing tomes of the extremity of ideology (ur-fascism), neutralized and redeemed by the real democratic conditions that bind us all: eating, shitting, fucking, killing, dying, all done through culinary and sexual (dis)pleasures.
Very much "cinema" but also a marker of the politics of the times, seemingly legitimated through this Criterion release for consumption, but more importantly, for its discussion.
