Review of Starry Is the Night (1988) by Mattias E — 04 Dec 2010
Minor Ann Hui entry that rises above average only because of the stellar performance from Brigitte Lin, in a convincing dual part acting her years as both a teenager and middle aged woman. As a whole, Starry Is The Night gives a rather underdeveloped impression though, with a central plot revolving around personal moral dilemma-type questions, while leaving the perhaps more interesting political issues left lurking in the background.
However, Ann Hui once again manages to impress with her range, giving proof that her alleged lack of consistent style is a sign of strength rather than weakness.
