Review of Soldier's Girl (2003) by Elizabeth H — 07 May 2010
This movie deserves credit for not just focusing on Barry Winchell's murder, which shows the worst humanity is capable of, but also giving a beautiful portrayal of the love affair that took place prior to his death.
Their love story rings true, from the initial awkwardness and mistrust to the complete comfort and intimacy they've achieved by the end. Lee Pace loses himself in his role to the point where I didnâ??t need to exert any effort to convince myself Iâ??m watching a woman, despite my familiarity with Pace as an actor.
However, while I understood the attempts to humanize the killer(s), it could have been done in far fewer scenes. All the scenes at the army base were repetitive or dull, and they threw off how perfectly paced Barry and Calperniaâ??s relationship development was.
