Review of Small Town Murder Songs (2010) by Greg B — 26 Jun 2011
As much as I loved the style of this Canadian film, I was left disappointed with the overall lack of engaging characters.
Each 'section' of the movie was either introduced by or accompanied by a song that was relevant to that section. A very interesting concept, but was let down by characters that just mumble through each scene and frankly are not approachable people.
The main character had a troubled past which haunts him as the sheriff of the small town. This should have been interesting, but frankly his recollection of the events are just a mumbling and boring as the remainder of the film.
The only really interesting characteri s that of Steve (the chief suspect in the murder), but he only has a couple of scenes, and frankly they just repeat his antics in each one.
I understand what the filmmakers tried to accomplish and give respect to their effort, but I feel that it fell short. the writing was great, but the characters are all just too subdued.
