Review of Sauna (2008) by Christopher B — 11 Jun 2010
What a great surprise. Sauna essentially tells the story of 2 brothers, one a brutal warrior with 73 murders of men, woman and children behind him, and the other a sensitive professor, who are marking the boundaries on between Sweden and Russia after a long and grueling war.
The warrior brother has trouble leaving his bloody past behind him and is obviously not happy about a warless future and the peaceful brother is happy to be going home. This is a great horror film dealing with guilt, redemption and loaded with enough religious symbolism that I don?t think I?ll understand everything about it until my 3rd or 4th viewing.
Plus, not to build up the ending too much, but the payoff is as good as the original Ringu, especially considering the buildup with people gouging out their own eyes (animals too) rather than see what?s to come.
I really loved this film.
