Review of Ricky Gervais Live: Animals (2003) by Samoa G — 03 Nov 2010
Look, Gervais is an acquired taste. You'll either love him, think he's alright, or think he's shit (which is fine, because it's an opinion- but you are wrong). I happen to love him. It's mind boggling to me just how casually he delivers this hilarity.
It all FEELS improvised and of the moment, like you're having a conversation with him at your local pub. His comedy is both vulgar and intelligent, superficial yet also philosophical, self-centred and yet also self-deprecating.
And these qualities apply not only to his stand up work, but also his television creations with Stephen Merchant, his movies and his podcasts. A more fantastic man I couldn't imagine.
