Review of Reds (1981) by Joel G — 26 Feb 2008
This has got to be one of the top five films of the 20th century. It does seem like a fluke that Hollywood would have produced a movie like this. And Beatty does deserve his Oscar as best director for his work here.
The 25th anniv DVD edition cuts the movie in two discs, right at the intermission (yes, in those days long movies had an intermission; and Reds may well have been the last to have one). And the DVD extras are sumptuous.
This just missed making it to Peter Travers' 1,000 Best Movies on DVD, as the DVD came a year after Travers' book.
