Review of Putney Swope (1969) by Bester L — 20 Sep 2007
It's got one of the best opening scenes I've really ever seen, ending with that name appearing on the screen in all its majestic onomatopoeia. You have no idea what in all earnest hell is going on, and then just like that, it all becomes clear.
Putney Swope is really funny, but it's not goofy. It has the kind of humour that comes from a firmly linear mind, and it chases every one of its wild ideas to the most logical end. If you don't love it like I do, it may be because it bores you - the pace of a movie like this is usually pretty clotty. But Putney Swope is an archetype, and there can only be so many of those around. You should see it.
