Review of Pontypool (2009) by Jamie B — 24 Oct 2011
I absolutely love this film. The first half is some of the most brilliantly unsettling and tension-building cinema you'll ever see. The film stumbles slightly halfway through when it needs to shift from its unconventional claustrophobic feel into more conventional expository territory, but the conceptual underpinnings of the story are so interesting and compelling (to me at least) that its structural flaws are easily forgiven.
And if nothing else this film features a downright mesmerizing performance by Stephen McHattie as Grant Mazzy. The descent of his charismatic, confident persona into utter confusion and vulnerability, combined with the overall atmosphere and cinematography of the film, makes for a consistently interesting and even chill-inducing watch.
