Review of Platoon (1986) by Jameson W — 12 Apr 2012
You just don't see enough young ensemble casts like this anymore. Hell- I don't even think Johnny Depp even had a line, that's how deep this cast was. I love the underlying themes of patriotism and anti-war that Sheen's character struggles with and how they're represented by Berenger and Dafoe- who were both phenomenal.
The transformation that Sheen's character goes through is really moving and takes the film from one place at the start to a completely different world by the end. It has some pretty intense action and violence that just makes it that much more affective.
As far as war movies goes, this has to be up there with Full Metal Jacket, Apocalypse Now and Saving Private Ryan, and perhaps is even better than all but the latter. If for some reason you haven't seen it, do it.
