Review of Philosophy of a Knife (2008) by Gaz H — 12 Mar 2009
This is quite possibly the worst piece of cinema I've ever come across. Instead of using his allegedly thorough research for something useful and informative like a documentary about these nightmarish but largely unknown events in human history, Iskanov presents a four-hour mélange of snowy landscapes, close-ups of faces, and obviously low-budget effects set against a jarring soundscape.
While the B&W photography is occasionally quite stirring, and the sound design occasionally quite effective, as a purported docu-drama, it's a complete failure. This is a black hole of suck. Trash and exploitation posing as "art".
