Review of Overlord (1975) by Nick M — 14 Aug 2008
The original trailer calls this film "haunting and hypnotic". No two words could more aptly describe this surrealistic and original piece. The thing that really impresses me about this film is how subtle the anti-war message is.
Most films (whether pro- or anti-war) are somewhat in-yer-face with whatever agenda they are pushing. Overlord is much more subdued, not only with it's message but with most of the performances, as well; this is especially true in the scene where the protaganist meets The Girl (my favorite scene).
Also, it was quite refreshing to see a D-Day film from the exclusive view of the British. Some of the archive footage seems completely random and out of place, but considering this film was produced by the Imperial War Museum, I suppose it was to be expected.
