Review of New York, New York (1977) by Brett B — 06 Sep 2011
Martin Scorsese's ode to classic musicals is uneven and overlong, but there is a lot in this film that works: Minnelli and DeNiro contribute strong performances, the set design is marvelous, and the cinematography is splendid, with the staging of several sequences (both musical and dramatic) being quite jaw-dropping in terms of camera movement and placement.
Plus, the fact that the title song's a great one helps, too.
