Review of Milk (2005) by Brian R — 12 May 2012
A great film on the life and political times of the late Harvey Milk. The film triumphs by getting the 1970's tacky decor and mannerisms down pat. The film goes for the human heart and I got to understand the frustrating barriers the GLBT community had to go through during those troubling times in american history.
Sean Penn quickly disappears his hollywood bad boy image and becomes Harvey Milk and it's an astonishing performance. Josh Brolin is effective as Dan White and also key performances from Emile Hirsch, James Franco, Diego Luna, Denis O'Hare, Joesph Cross, Victor Garber and Alison Pill.
Director Gus Vant Sant is the only director I can think of who approaches this with real confidence.
