Review of Magnificent Obsession (1935) by Edith N — 11 Dec 2010
Possibly if I'd seen this Sirk film first, I would have rated it higher. But the very straight take on melodramatic situations (and there are some shockers) falls short of the glorious over-the-top subversive intensity he would develop later.
Still, Rock Hudson shows some great character development as he moves from spoiled playboy to competent neurosurgeon and Jane Wyman is sympathetic, if a bit bland. As always with Sirk, the technicolor mise en scene is top notch.
