Review of Lost Highway (1997) by David S — 26 Aug 2008
Lost Highway takes the notion of film noir and pushes it to its logical extreme, a dark fantasy psycho horror. A lot has been made about all the sense (none) the movie supposedly makes. I tell you it makes complete sense. As with all Lynch films, don't psychoanalyze it, don't look for subtle symbolism, don't over intellectualize it. Go along for the ride and you might make sense of it all.
Really it's a straight noir story: a femme fatale, gangsters, betrayal, porn and money. It's the dark fantasy side, the externalization of the hero's psyche, that throws people for a loop. To me, that's what makes it so excellent.
Watch it and don't tailgate. Ever.
Oh and the new DVD release is excellent. Watch it and avoid that cruddy FS copy.
