Not sure why some reviewers think this film is just a run-of-the-mill coming of age story...there are plenty of elements that aren't run of the mill and also serve to highlight the social context of the period.
I thought it was serious and winsome at the same time--a rare combination. Never sappy but sweet in a satisfying way, and thoughtful enough to ensure that grittier aspects of the time are there on the periphery.
