Review of Letters from Iwo Jima (2006) by Gavin T — 20 Sep 2009
Watched it on AMC. Really well done and better than it's sister film Flags of Our Father's. Departed was good, but this should have taken the academy award that year. Great performances by Watanabe and the actor who plays the private/baker.
It portrays warfare as a grim thing, neither glorifying it or tearing it down. It shows the THe Japanese battle ideals of honor however which are spot on. Beware if you get quezy for the sepuku scene.
If you are unfamiliar to sepuku, its basically japanese for suicide. Wikipedia can help you out.
