Review of Late Phases (2014) by Jeff C — 12 Dec 2014
Late Phases is the breakout horror surprise of the year. This seemingly simple werewolf tale has heart and some bite to spare. Nick Damici turns in an excellent performance as retired war vet Ambrose McKinley.
It's hard to believe that this is the same guy who had never acted before in his life prior to indie favorite Mulberry St. a few years back. Strong performances all across the board in fact. Aided by the strong writing.
. Lance Guest, Ethan Embry, and the ever reliable Tom Noonan do their part and then some. The monster action is, in actuality, only a small portion of the story. Director Adrian García Bogliano keeps the focus on McKinley, as he pieces together the events leading up to the blood soaked finale.
The creatures themselves are fun, exceptional in their low budget charm, and lovably old school. I was reminded of childhood favorites like Silver Bullet, and newer gems like Dog Soldiers and Ginger Snaps.
Genre fans owe it to themselves to seek this one out.
