Review of Late Phases (2014) by Richard L — 05 Jun 2015
A little bit different approach to werewolf tales, focusing on an elderly, grumpy, occasionally racist man in a retirement community who begins to suspect that the neighbors and their pets are being eaten by something more than just wild animals coming in from the woods at night. As he prepares for the next full moon, his strained relationship with his son grows worse, paralleling the coming threat. Because the protagonist is so abrasive, it is sometimes difficult to cheer for him. The tone is serious, even when the situations wants to veer into comedy, resulting in a little unevenness. Some of the motivations of the other characters, especially the priest, were a little unclear to me.
The transformations scenes were handled pretty well, but I have to admit that I'm not especially convinced by werewolf effects these days. Still, I liked how the camera moved back and forth in a particular transformation scene.
