Review of Land and Freedom (1995) by Lynda M — 13 Jul 2008
This film is like a composite of orwells' homage to catalonia and the manic's if you tolerate this your children will be next. It also made me think how apolitical young people are today in comparison to the idealistic young socialists who were the first to tackle the nascent evil of fascism in the 1930's.
Moreover like homage it in some way explained the failings of socialism in the 20th century ie in fighting because of the many strands of leftist thought, and the dominant role of the ussr and the shadow it cast over the mere mention of socialism in the 20th century.
I also loved this film cause the story of the spanish civil war is told on such a human level by loach and his use of the working class liverpudlian ie a history from below.
