Review of Kung Fu Hustle (2004) by Juan C — 04 Jun 2011
Stephen Chow proves once again why he is my hero.
Musings circa 2007:
I know dubs are universally hideous, but this was something special. Perhaps I have extremely high opinion of what is allowable, but in anyone..s terms, the Kung Fu Hustle dub is dire. White people pretending to be Asian. Helium voices. Poor fits of voice actors to the cast. Misinterpretations of the dialogue. Obscure and needless additions to the dialogue. Voices not matching facial expressions. Replies that make no sense.
Ahh.. I never imagined the mood of the film could be damaged in such a manner. The empathy with the protagonist was lost as the film became a pure slapstick comedy, rather than heroic tale it is. Noticing such I give Stephen Chow more credit. The balance between comedy and the banal is such a tightrope. Congratulations.
