Review of Justice League Dark (2017) by Alex S — 25 Jul 2018
The 'dark' of the title may have some magical connotation, but what sets this team apart is their contrast to the straight-laced do-gooders of the Justice League, they have other priorities and the film's exploration of these and the way the difference is used to subvert expectations is where it triumphs.
The actual magic weighs it down more than anything, the problem with magic based on spells is that there are no rules to it's hard to be concerned for our heroes' defeat or impressed by their safety.
While it's nice to see a different part of the DC universe given the spotlight, but there's almost too much mythology, backstories are given where they aren't needed, and they eat into the short runtime.
Still the characters are all interesting, they have great chemistry with one another and they are worth watching as they provide a great deal of laughs and just a little bit of heart.
