This was probably a big deal back in the day. Boyle is a big mouth racist who hates everything that is a little different. He meets a guy who happened to kill a drug dealer - they become friends and hang out.
He could have blackmailed him with the info he held but instead wanted to hang with somebody he believed shared his thoughts on America and the hippies and "all the kids who are ruining America".
Hanging out was probably the worst thing that could happen. Boyle is great as a loud mouth crazy man. Susan Sarandon looks fantastic in this, her first film. Crazy ending. From the director who did Rocky!
