Review of Jem and the Holograms (2015) by Lissa P — 22 Oct 2015
As a fan of the cartoon I appreciated how they distilled all the parts I loved about that show into a super current teen/tween girl power/band movie that my daughters loved on its own merit and I connected to again and again with visual and dialogue references.
They dropped the things that made the cartoon lame, gave it a great soundtrack, and brought it into a realistic 2015 in a way Disney teen/tween movies still fail to do. They didn't shy away from things that will make it look dated in very short order.
But it's those same things that today's teens will look back on fondly. The way I enjoyed the very dated references back to the original cartoon. They also gave it a very empowering message about identity for girls.
My daughter cried. Take your daughters to see it.
