Review of Irina Palm (2007) by Dave J — 02 Aug 2008
A cult classic in the making if ever I saw one. It's laugh-out-loud funny in places, but Marianne Faithfull is perfectly cast as Maggie, the woman going to extraordinary lengths to give her stricken grandchild a helping hand.
Like Maggie, Faithfull came from a privileged background but became embroiled in scandal and faced hard times, and the dignity of her performance here makes Maggie moving even when the plot stretches credulity.
I'd be fascinated to know whether the working arrangement used by Maggie here actually exists anywhere... and if so, how does it allow for the fact that men have quite a range of different heights?
