Review of I'm Not There (2007) by Malavka D — 06 Oct 2009
"I've got a head full of ideas, and it's driving me insane"- Bob Dyaln. The biopic genre has been around forever and the musical biopic genre is a tiresome and repitive lot of films that despite highlighting different singer personality's lifes, have all been very similar to narrative structure.
Then comes "I'm Not There", the most bold and original musical biopic to date, and probably biopic in generally. With 6 different talented actors taking a stab at Bob Dylan, the film switches in tone constantly and never becomes dull.
Whether it be Heath Ledger's jerk actor, Christian Bale's born-again preacher or Richard Gere's lone cowboy, each and every incranation of Dylan is more fresh and entertaining then the last.
Bob Dylan himself has made a fairly complex life and to tackle it in such a bizzare way and make it work as good as it does, well, a massive bravo to Todd Haynes. It's fierce, haunting and trail-blazing, the master piece biopic is here.
