Review of I, Tonya (2017) by Hazard N — 20 Mar 2018
An essentially perfect film. Robbie and Janney were (rightfully) singled out for praise, but Stan and Hauser are equally astonishing as Gillooly and Eckhardt, the latter absolutely brilliant in a role he was born to play.
There is a clinging small-town shabbiness to everything that has leached into the lives of these people, lending them a grim determinism that is comedic and pathetic at the same time. It's a true "what it means to be American" story, with Harding's all-too self-aware evaluation of herself and her story spang on the money - we're all culpable.
