Review of I Am Love (2010) by Jeremy B — 26 Jun 2010
Best movie of the year for me, with Winter's Bone a close second. This visually and aurally lush feast tells a fairly simple story of a Russian emigre who marries into a wealthy Milano manufacturing family who falls in love with a younger man, a chef who is a friend of her eldest son.
We are IN scene after scene of parties and meetings and the comings and goings of the truly rich, and so it's easy to understand how extraordinarily bored Tilda's character Emma must be without the filmmaker 'telling' us in any overt way.
Cinematographically daring, operatically told, the story sweeps you along with the rising passion of the characters. I gasped time and time again as the filmmakers brought me deeper into the lives of this pampered and tortured family, especially Tilda, who gives another of her meticulous performances.
Go see this if you can find it in a theatre.
