Review of Holy Motors (2012) by Alan W — 24 Oct 2012
A man (Denis Lavant-a revelation) gets picked up in the morning by a chauffeur, and bleary-eyed asks about the day's appointments. Nine, apparently. The first involves him dressing as an impoverished old woman and begging in the street.
The second sees him donning motion-capture gear & simulating a fight in an empty room, then sex with a rubber-clad mystery woman. The third... Well, the less said about the third the better. Make no mistake, HOLY MOTORS is weird.
Very weird. But it's also funny, disturbing, energetic, hypnotic & quite quite brilliant. Not as impenetrable as it might sound, there are layers of meaning that can be justifiably mooted, though you might have a much fun letting this gleefully imaginative cinematic oddity wash over you & thrill you with its silliness, inventiveness, & passion for the medium.
Worth the effort.
