Review of Hollywoodland (2006) by Jon L — 15 Jul 2010
This was my favorite film of 2006, and one of my ten best of the '00 decade. It flawlessly weaves back and forth between two parallel storylines - the past, as George Reeves (Ben Affleck, in a performance that should have been Oscar winning) rises to fame as TV's Superman only to crash and burn the second he shoots for a serious role; and the present, as private investigator Adrien Brody attempts to shed light on the mysterious suicide of Reeves.
Or is it murder? Both male leads are strong and likable, but it's the atmosphere of "Hollywoodland" that truly shines. This is a movie that you find yourself completely losing yourself in, emotionally invested in its personalities and fascinated by its foreboding mystery.
Highly recommended for all cinephiles.
