Current literary obsession with Hemingway aside, the film falls short because it ambitiously seeks to explore three themes - Gellhorn as a someone with her own gravitas, Hemingway's self-destructive ways, and the "war" their relationship becomes - and does neither fully or in a satisfactory manner.
