Review of Heaven's Gate (1980) by Jeremy G — 09 Oct 2007
The picture that famously dragged UA down, this sprawling, self-indulgent epic sees the director of The Deerhunter lovingly recreate an obscure American range war for fin-de-siecle atmo and spread. John Hurt as a decadent Brit is, as ever, awesome and Chris Walken and Kris Kristofferson play off each other with a casual fierceness.
The cinematography is mind-blowing, recalling The Searchers for the sense it gives of the unforgiving frontier. The tale of new immigrants pitted against old, each other and the established order has a strange resonance with our own times.
