Review of Harakiri (1962) by Brendan O — 27 Jul 2007
"The Wild Bunch" of Samurai Films. Harakiri reveals the hypocrisy and emptiness in the samurai code and that things are not always as they seem. examine justice, revenge, hypocrisy, integrity and the samurai code in the Japanese, samurai culture.
In the movie Harakiri, justice and revenge are parallel to each other. It challenges traditional belief of honor and what is to be done and simply not to be done. Kobayashi's direction is masterful, keeping an unbearable suspense during the mostly talky film, handling the touching scenes with care and maturity and giving us a sweeping fight to top all that.
Poetic Tragic and beauty easily rivaling even the Great Kurosawa.
