Review of Growing Up Smith (2017) by Nadine F — 03 Feb 2017
Growing Up Smith is a charming, sweet coming-of-age story that has more going on than at first glance. Anyone who remembers falling in love for the first time will relate to the awkward young Smith who has a huge crush on the girl across the street.
Yet Smith's future has been mapped out by his traditional Indian father: a young bride has already been selected for him, and he's expected to become a neurosurgeon. Issues about balancing tradition with assimilation force the family to make difficult decisions. Young Smith also has to contend with school bullies and racial/ethnic challenges. Despite this, Growing Up Smith never loses its heart and humor.
I can't say enough about this movie. It is a gentle delight worth seeing again and again.
