Review of Gosford Park (2001) by Albert T — 03 Apr 2011
Yet another early 2000 movies that has aged quite well so far.
Great directing by Robert Altman, taking in the whole ensemble even when focusing on a particular character, perfect (if somewhat glacial) pacing, and just downright stellar performances from everyone. And then there's the cast itself: Hellen Mirren, Michael Gambon, Clive Owen, Emily Watson, Kelly Macdonald, Derek Jacobi ... (much to my surprise quite a few of them ended-up on Harry Potter!).
If there's a weakness it's the whole murder mystery plot, especially as that was how the studio tried to sell the movie, but more than anything this was a period piece, a character study, a social commentary ... and the murder mystery played well though other aspects of the plot are far superior. One of my favorite movies of all time.
