Review of Giant (1956) by Ben G — 19 Dec 2009
George Stevens has crafted a one-of-a-kind melodrama that looks and feels like no other. It's not composed of climatic sequences, but rather intimate character moments. The modern equivalent of Giant would be Quentin Tarantino's Jackie Brown, believe it or not. Both are great "hang out" movies.
Of the actors, James Dean fairs best. He's truly stunning, expressing a brooding intensity that has influenced so many other great actors who have emerged since, including Al Pacino, Robert De Niro, and Jack Nicholson.
The cinematography is almost too good to be true.
