Review of Ghoulies (1985) by Justin H — 07 Mar 2009
This is one of those types of horror flicks peculiar to the '80s that isn't good, and isn't terrible, but instead is just plain dull. The paper-thin plot involves an infant slated to be sacrificed by a satanic cult, only to be spared because of an amulet thrown around its neck by a dissenting cult member.
25 years later, said infant has grown up to inherit the estate formerly occupied by the cult, and then begins dabbling in the rituals described in the old books he finds. Throw in some odious comic relief characters (who don't even have names, I don't think), a love interest, an undead cultist, and some slimy hand puppets (that don't really do much, considering the movie is named after them), and that's about all there is.
"Ghoulies" is meandering, slow, and not particularly interesting--even from a "making fun of it" standpoint.
