If you want an example of how a short can be successful then watch George Lucas in Love. Nussbaum directed this after leaving USC passed it around and got a directing deal. Admitedly he went on to direct two of possibly the worst films of all time in Sleepover and American Pie Presents: The Naked Mile.
If Nausbaum picked those projects then God help him. If it was Dreamworks then its a case of evil corporation. Either way George Lucas is one of the quintessential short films.
