Excellent movie!
I rank it with Braveheart and Dances With Wolves amongst historic-fiction action dramas. A real life folk hero - a Civil War era Robin Hood. And McConaughey is absolutely born for this role. If this film is not the recipient of multiple awards, it'll be a travesty and a sham of an oversight.
Some scenes are hard to watch, but then war is never an easy thing to witness - especially in an era when medical technology had a great distance yet to catch up to military tech.
